lots of dolls

For the past 2 weeks I have been working every hour I could find to try and build a little stock for my etsy shop in the run up to Christmas and I thought I'd share with you the sweet little dolls I made in that time.
Last night I finished this heavy baby doll. She is weighted with 2 little cotton bags stuffed with organic grain and then tightly wrapped in wool roving. She is button jointed and her arms and legs both move making her gorgeous to pose and she sits alone beautifully.
She has detailed fingers and toes.
Her hair is of softest mohair boucle knitted into a cap and then firmly stitched onto her head and brushed out to give it that baby fuzziness.
She comes wearing a little cloth nappy, a pink organic cotton nightie and matching hat. She also comes with a newborn sized babygro, handknitted cardi and booties in pure wool yarn.

I have also made her a mei tei sling in this really funky, retro flower fabric. If you are interested in buying her please pop over to my facebook page and message me there of you can email me laura.whalen@yahoo.ie.

She was so much fun to make and I hope she'll find her new mama or papa in time for Christmas.
 I have also made a host of angels this week;
 four tiny 3 inch ones,
and one Christmas tree angel. She has a hollow tube instead of legs and will look down from upon the tree smiling love and good wishes over the people of the house.
And finally I made a bundle of snuggle buddies, all perfect for a babies first or second Christmas. The 3 in the front row are all organic cotton and they will all make wonderful snuggle companions :-)
Please pop by and have a look at my shop and see if there is anyone there calling you to give them a home.
I have ambitions this week for 1 custom 16 inch doll, 2 tiny fairy dolls and a requested 2nd set of clothes (and then I might think about crafting for our own Christmas lol) x

Buddies - playdough

**In September 2011 6 families got together and started Buddies Home School. Each week we meet in each other's home and follow a simple rhythm: movement and music, craft/ baking, snack time, free play and story time. Each part of the session is led by a different family. We are sharing this week's session with you here...***

This week at Buddies we started as usual singing some simple songs with the kids. Our 'Old MacDonald has a farm' is getting funnier and funnier every week. This week he had asteroids, cars and bees on his farm.

We had thought about going for a walk in the woods but the weather was really unfriendly so we decided we would make playdough instead and really simple activity that leads to lots of play and is also warming on the hands.
Each child had a bowl and a spoon and we put in...
1 cup of plain flour
1/2 cup of salt
1 tbsp cream of tartan
1 tsp of food colouring
1 tbsp oil
1 cup of boiling water (mummies did this)
and we mixed and mixed until it was just right, adding a little more flour here and there where needed
 and then we played...

Joa very kindly did the washing up while the rest of us had a snack and a drink, then the kids played while mummies had tea and cleared up.
We finished with Beth reading Allan Ahlberg's 'Each Peach, Pear, Plum'

finding the woman within

I started going through puberty when I was 8 or 9 years old. I  vividly remember sitting in the bath one night looking at my body and asking my mum what was happening to me. She told me that my body was changing and that I was becoming a woman. I went to bed that night and sobbed my heart out.  I wanted to be a little girl, I didn't want to be a woman.
Perhaps this was the beginning of a block I put upon myself, but I feel like I never did become that woman. I buried her deep within myself and never allowed her to emerge. As I grew older my difficult relationship with my body continued and my feelings of dislike and shame prevented me from ever developing an identity as a sexual woman.
But this is changing and the woman within me is emerging. I am finding her, finding what she looks like and feels like, finding what she likes and what she doesn't and do you know what, she's fabulous.

This is a very exciting time for me and this is why I am sharing it with you here. Those of you who have followed my blog for a while will know what a journey of self discovery I have been on this past year and for me this is one of the final pieces of the puzzle.

I became very aware of this missing part of my self a few years ago.
I have had a very strong sense of my self; of the various roles I played in my life and of the different identities I have such as mother, friend, earthling. But there was a gaping hole, Laura the woman was not there. At first I was amazed by the realisation and then I became increasingly frustrated. Where was she and how would I find her and bring her out to the light?
Over and over again I saw this gap reflected back to me, in books I read, friends I talked with, in my relationships and intimacy in general.

About a year ago I had a discussion with my counsellor in one of our sessions about the identities that I have. She asked me if I could describe what they looked like. I could; the wife wore a green dress, a-line and beautiful, the mother soft flowing linens and floral prints. The earthling had long dreadlocks and bright rainbow coloured clothes, but I didn't know what the sexy woman looked like. My home work for that week was to make a wardrobe, or even just find colours or fabrics or anything really that would represent each of those identities. I did this and found snippets of fabric that felt right for each role, but I found nothing for her. I started a pinterest board called 'through the wardrobe doors' a cheaper and less time consuming way to 'shop' for the look of each identity but I still didn't find her.

The sense of frustration was leaving though, I didn't feel so desperate to find her, so cross that she wasn't just there under the surface for me to grab her hand and pull her out. At the New Year I simply asked for her to come. I made my bid to the universe and said I was ready and then I let it go. I continued to practice my yoga and meditation and running, to still my mind and find the peace of being truly myself with no noise going on. And then during the summer, I found her.

I found her by becoming my true self. I found her because I knew she was there. I found her because I was patient enough to wait for her to emerge without being dragged. I found her because I believed in her. I found her because I am her.

Once I found her I started to listen. To hear what she likes and who she is. My friend has a little business selling vintage clothing and furniture and I heard her say 'wow'. I hear music with a deep base beat and I feel her move her hips. I see bright red and blue, polka dots and stripes and I hear her say 'that's so me' I find a pair of peep toe heels in a charity shop and she says 'get them, they're fabulous'.
I look at myself in the mirror and I see her and she makes me smile, and makes butterflies flutter in my stomach and excitement rise in my throat.
Here looking back at me is this woman, this gorgeous, sexy woman.
I knew she was there and here I am!

(By the way the dress in the pictures is the one that I made for myself, I worked without a pattern, sewing from the heart and fitting it on myself over and over again. I loved the process of making this dress and buying the bits and pieces to go with it like the shoes and my bright red petticoat. I had so many people comment on it when I wore it to the wedding last week, I felt really special in it, alive and beautiful and me!)

Halloween and pumpkin cake

This year we had the best Halloween ever. In the morning we carved our pumpkins,
then using the flesh I made pumpkin soup and this pumpkin cake.
 Recipe (from a LLL magazine)
200g raisins
200g sugar
4 eggs
120g sunflower oil
200g buckwheat flour (you can use semolina too)
100g plain spelt (or wheat) flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp mixed spice
1 tsp salt
3 tsp baking powder
100g crushed walnuts
3 hand fulls of fresh grated pumpkin (you could also use 6 apples, or the equivalent carrot or courgette)

Mix everything together and bake at 150 degrees for about an hour.

We also made pumpkin gingerbreads,
After dinner the kids got dressed up in their costumes and we went to visit our neighbours to offer a slice of cake or a biscuit in return for the goodies they gave us.
After that we waited for our friends to come by trick or treating at our house and we went with them to the estate on which they live in the village. There we had the most wonderful Halloween celebration.
There was a big bonfire and lots of kids. Garry arrived after work dressed as a bear and with beer to share, just in time for a really beautiful fireworks display. Benny and Joa had never seen fireworks before and I think I spent as much time watching their wee faces as I did watching the sky. There were glo-sticks and chinese lanterns, chat, sparklers and fun. Joa fell asleep on my lap in front of the fire and the other 2 went into one of the houses to watch a little tv with the other kids. There was such a great sense of welcome and community and I was so happy that we got to be a part of it.
Unfortunately Joa woke up and was sick, then when we went home Benny was sick too. Rebe was sick the next morning and by mid morning I had caught the bug too, so we spent all day yesterday feeling very sick and sorry for ourselves.
We're all on the mend now though, but relishing the memories of such a great Halloween :-)
