Buddies - Home Kindergarten

Today was our first home kindergarten session. It was simply lovely. Everyone came prepared and excited to be working together.

We started our session with a welcome song and some wonderful rhymes and singing lead by one of our mummies.

We sang songs new and old with fingerplays that the kids really enjoyed. We ended the singing session with an old favourite:

If you're happy and you know it...

'Do some baking'

Everyone had brought their apron and their bowl and spoon.

Another mummy had organised this part of our day. She had brought all the ingredients and showed us how to make these wonderful biscuits:

Oaties (WARNING: you definitely won't be able to stop at one)

2 cups sr flour

2 cups porridge oats

1/2 lb butter

4 oz caster sugar

1 small tsp baking soda
Mix everything together roll into small balls press flat with a fork and bake in a preheated oven 180 C for 15 mins

We sang a great mixing song. It worked really, well each child having their own bowl. Amanda had worked out that each child had enough ingredients to make 5 cookies each.

The kids really enjoyed getting their hands in and working together.

When the cookies were baking and each child had washed their hands and their own bowl and spoon we had a snack.

We kept this very simple and healthy; brown bread and butter, fruit and raisins and water or milk to drink.

Suitably revived the kids had about 20 mins free play time in the playroom and in the garden. This gave the mummies a chance to grab a cup of tea and plan next weeks session and divide up the jobs.

We used a 'clean up' song to signal the end of playtime and to tidy up giving us the space and time to settle for a group story.

I used finger puppets to act out the story of the three billy goats gruff. I was delighted when the kids demanded we tell the story again for a second time and then took the puppets off and acted the story themselves.

We sang a good bye song and parted very excited about how well the day went and also looking forward to next weeks session.

I will post at a future date about how to go about setting up your own home kindergarten and will continue posting about our meetings, sharing some of what we are doing :-)

  2. beautiful, this looks like a wonderful day together-- and so much purposeful work going on both ends...
I tell the same story for our 3 day playschool week. I have now learned not to worry if it is "enough", if they are entertained, if they are happy...they always are. it is always enough. retelling a story makes for familiarity and the opportunity for the child to really live into it....
cant wait to hear more about your days together!

  4. This is the moment I wished my children were little again (or me being a grandma) so I could bake some cookies with them. It must have smelled good!
